Domestic carbon industry will catapult through the low carbon movement

Low carbon economy provides new opportunity for Chinese economy to develop soundly and rapidly. As for carbon industry, low carbon economy brings both opportunities and challenges. Carbon industry has to meet two main requirements of low carbon economy. The first requirement is to develop and produce carbon products that meet the need of production of regenerative and clean energy; the other is the reduction of energy consumption and emission in its own production process.
Carbon fiber is light, strong and corrosion-resistant, which make it applicable in many fields that have broad market. When employed in automobile production, it can greatly reduce weight, fuel and emission. It is also employed in the production of rotary wings for wind driven generator and reinforcing materials in construction industry. In addition to the above-mentioned new promising markets, photovoltaic solar industry, traditional customer of carbon industry, is developing at a rapid speed. Nowadays the Chinese central government budgeted 1.27 billion for the launch of solar roof project, whose consumption of graphite specialties is 30000 mt/year.
Most of the carbon products in demand can be domestically manufactured, but the performance and quantity of some products can not meet the market demand. Therefore, it is necessary that domestic carbon industry increases investment in R&D to improve innovative ability.
Moreover, carbon industry can also reduce energy consumption and emission in its own production process. Although carbon electrodes’ comprehensive energy consumption is only about 0.8-1.05 standard coal, the average comprehensive energy consumption of domestic carbon industry is 10%-20% more than that of foreign advanced carbon industry because of high rate of spoiled products. In order to increase rate of final products, carbon companies should try to select steady and qualified raw materials and fix regular raw material suppliers. The selection of coal pitch binder is of great importance and it is the trend for the production of graphite electrodes and carbon products in aluminum industry to employ modified pitch. In addition, carbon companies should timely carry out technical innovation. If domestic carbon industry can reduce comprehensive energy consumption by 5%, the emission of CO2 can be reduced by 2 million mt/year.
Low carbon economy provides domestic carbon industry with excellent opportunity to adjust structure, adapt to market and update industry. Domestic carbon industry should take the chance to go on the track of sound and ordered development.
